I was recently at a recruitment workshop at the University of Arizona--a place where the edges of applied mathematics and unapplied mathematics are blurred. I was constantly amused when people kept casually asking other people, \"Are you pure?\" I would answer that I was quite impure, and they would look at me funny. What else is new?
